Breeding program

At Rocky Wolf Ranch in Alberta, you can learn about our breeding program for Canadian Eskimo Dogs and Alaskan Malamutes – with the goal of preserving these traditional Arctic breeds and responsibly selecting healthy, strong-minded dogs for sport, family life, and therapy.

We have been breeding Alaskan Malamutes for 16 years and Canadian Eskimo Dogs for the past 6 years.
Under the kennel name Kyassnowflake, family dogs, therapy dogs, and sport dogs have been raised. Many satisfied dog owners speak for themselves.

As responsible breeders, we breed only upon request – and exclusively with females and males that have passed breeding approval with very good results.

On the following pages, you will find all information about the Alaskan Malamute and Canadian Eskimo Dog breeds, as well as our kennel, breeding, and litters.

Kyassnowflake

Under this name, many Alaskan Malamutes and Canadian Eskimo Dogs were born in Germany and have gone on to new lives across much of Europe.

As responsible breeders, we only breed on request – and exclusively with dogs approved for breeding, meaning dogs that have passed examinations such as eye testing (DOK) and hip dysplasia screening with excellent results.

Our breeding females have at least one year break between litters.

Carefully planned matings, as well as veterinary monitoring and documentation of pregnancy and birth, are standard.

All puppies stay in the house until the 5th week and then – regardless of the season – move with their mother into an outdoor kennel with a run.

Puppies are not placed with their new owners before the 10th week. Our experience over many years has shown that especially between weeks 8 and 10, puppies make an important step in their social development, with the mother and siblings playing a key role.

Our stud dogs are also available to other breeders upon request.

The frequency of litters depends on demand.

If you have any questions about the breeds, our breeding, or a puppy, feel free to get in touch.

Puppies may also be placed in Europe under certain conditions.

Litter announcements will be published here on the website.

WOLFWALKER´S AGAINST THE WIND

Litter Announcement

...we are expecting the puppies at the end of April

For the end of April, we are expecting a litter of Alaskan Malamutes.

Both parent dogs are approved for breeding.

Mother:    BEARMALS AMBROSIA
(NORD CRYSTAL BRUNGILDA × JOSUE DU LOUP INDIEN DE L’ARTIQUE)

Father:    WOLFWALKER’S AGAINST THE WIND
(AKIAK RED’S BO JANGLES × WOLFWALKER’S CIRCINAE)

AMBROSIA is friendly and people-oriented, stable in character and true to the breed. She is selective with other females and a very caring, reliable mother.

WOLFWALKER has a friendly, clear character, is confident and strongly work-oriented.

With this pairing, we place particular emphasis on healthy, strong-minded dogs with clear working ability and a stable character – suitable for active families, sport, or work.

We place our puppies only in suitable, responsible homes.

Canadian Eskimo Dog (CED)

Due to the rarity of this breed, breeding is significantly more demanding than usual. Worldwide, there are only around 600 dogs, which means the genetic base is very limited.

This makes it all the more important for breeders to work closely together internationally to avoid related pairings – a challenging but necessary task.

Experience and knowledge regarding behavior, traits, performance, and more are still very limited. Most of the existing knowledge is based on a single book by Kim Han, as well as the experience of a small number of pioneers who have dedicated themselves to preserving this breed.

The Canadian Eskimo Dog Club, based in Canada, is working to increase awareness of the breed through informational events and exhibitions.

The Canadian Eskimo Dog Research & Legacy Foundation
(https://www.canadian-eskimodog-foundation.org/)

is also actively focused on the long-term preservation of the breed. Its work includes collecting and processing data, supporting responsible breeding, and promoting international collaboration between breeders, owners, and experts. At the same time, partnerships with universities are being pursued to further develop scientific knowledge on genetics, health, and breed characteristics.

So far, there are only a few mushers who are dedicated to this breed and actively support it.

We ourselves took on this breed seven years ago with the first breeding pair in Germany – and have never regretted it.

They are special. They are different. They are loud – and they will constantly make you laugh with their unique character.

We love them.

Alaskan Malamute

It all started for us – as it often does – with a Husky named Jacky.

Shortly after, an Alaskan Malamute named Yukon I followed, then another Husky, Jack. Three dogs in front of a sled look a bit unusual – so Akhira, another Alaskan Malamute, joined us.

This gave us a direct comparison of the two breeds from the very beginning. It quickly became clear that they cannot truly be compared – and that, especially from a sporting perspective, you eventually have to make a decision.

And we did. For the Alaskan Malamute.

Because of his character, strength, and balance, we chose – at the expense of speed – the “locomotive of the North.” To this day, unlike many other mushers, we remain loyal to this breed.

Especially in our sled dog programs and in daily interaction with guests, children, people with disabilities, and even large groups, Malamutes show an exceptionally calm, relaxed, and remarkably friendly nature.

In addition to sport dogs, our breeding produces above all excellent family dogs, as well as therapy and school dogs.

Yes, they can be stubborn. Yes, they do not always handle their strength carefully.

But they are always friendly and patient with people.

That is why we chose the Alaskan Malamute from the heart.

By registering for one of our sled dog programs, I confirm that I have read and accept the liability waiver!
